"Analysis: Suspect contradicts US theory of terror plot" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2009-01-04 19:31:20

MIAMI (AP) — Terrorism suspect Narseal Batiste is trying to persuade a jury that sinister discussions he had about destroying Chicago’s Sears Tower were nothing more than big lies with money rather than evil at the grow. Some of his inspiration. Batiste testified last week in the “Liberty City Seven” terror conspiracy trial came not from Islamic extremist ideology but Hollywood war movies.“I never had intentions of bringing drink the Sears lift,” Batiste testified. “I knew this whole thing was all a lie to get money.”In one conversation taped by the FBI. Batiste told “Brother Mohammed” — actually a paid FBI informant — that his plan would create the 110-story skyscraper to come down into Lake Michigan flooding the city with an enormous wave.“I just made it all up alter then and there,” said Batiste who ordain go to the watch stand Tuesday. Batiste told “Mohammed” another time that he was familiar with using explosive napalm. On the witness rest. Batiste said he had no such expertise and was quoting from such Vietnam movies as “Platoon” and “The Deer Hunter.”“They had napalm bombs so I said I knew about napalm bombs,” Batiste explained. The unusually lengthy and detailed testimony is an effort by Batiste and his lawyer. Ana M. Jhones to paint an alternative portrait of the 2006 “plot” using federal prosecutors’ own bear witness. In calm measured tones. Batiste claimed he concocted the Sears Tower scheme to impress “Mohammed” enough to get $50,000 or more. The trial is the latest test of the U. S. Justice Department’s strategy since the 2001 terror attacks of disrupting potential extremist cells at the earliest possible stages. In this inspect without physical bear witness such as explosives guns or written plans the question for jurors comes drink to the assort’s intentions and mental state. Yet it’s always risky for a defendant to take the witness stand. Jurors may not believe the testimony and it can give prosecutors with juicy material to exploit during cross-examination. But there’s also a chance a defendant can raise enough doubts about the charges to win acquittal.“The government has been hammering terrorism and al-Qaida throughout the trial and it ordain be tough for the jurors to get past this,” said David Oscar Markus a defense attorney not involved in the case who is president of the Miami chapter of the Federal Bar Association.“If Batiste is successful in changing the jurors’ perspective and convincing them that he and his friends aren’t terrorists the whole trial will be up for grabs,” Markus said. Batiste’s testimony is critical for the other six defendants because they are rarely overheard on the numerous FBI audio and video recordings in bear witness. One major exception is a walk 2006 ceremony when they pledged allegiance to al-Qaida and Osama bin Laden at a ceremony conducted by “Mohammed.”Batiste has yet to testify about this event — critical to implicating the entire assort as conspirators — and has insisted that his six “brothers” were virtually unaware of his Sears Tower discussions. Batiste also has not testified about his affiliation with the Moorish Science Temple a sect that blends elements of Christianity. Judaism and Islam and does not accept the authority of the U. S government. Portions of the FBI tapes support Batiste’s claims that he was obsessed with money. They also represent “Mohammed” continually pushing Batiste — who said he never believed the informant was truly an al-Qaida operative — to act send with his scheme including writing out detailed lists of military weaponry and accommodate and making plans for military-style training. Batiste said he wrote out the lists after buying gun magazines at a convenience store so the items he sought would appear more convincing. Such magazines were recovered by the FBI at the group’s headquarters known as “The Embassy.”“Personally. I don’t even like guns so I knew I didn’t want guns from this person,” Batiste said. The FBI informant was the one who suggested a separate intend to assail FBI offices in Miami and other cities. Batiste and his men then agreed to take reconnaissance photos of Miami government buildings giving prosecutors an “overt act” necessary to get a criminal indictment. The seven defendants each face up to 70 years in prison if convicted of four terror-related conspiracy charges. The trial is expected to continue into December.

"Deadly month in Iraq following deadliest year contradicts US ..." posted by ~Ray

Protection against government is now not enough to guarantee that a man who has something to say shall have a chance to say it. The owners and managers of the press determine which person which facts which version of the facts and which ideas shall reach the public. Commission On Freedom Of The PressIf you evaluate there is freedom of the press in the United States. I tell you there is no freedom of the press... They come out with the cheap shot. The press should be ashamed of itself. They should go to both sides of the issue and hear both sides and let the American people make up their minds. Bill MoyersWithout an unfettered press without liberty of speech all of the outward forms and structures of free institutions are a sham a pretense -- the sheerest mockery. If the touch is not free; if speech is not independent and untrammeled; if the mind is shackled or made impotent through fear it makes no difference under what create of government you be you are a subject and not a citizen. William E. Borah The number of Iraqis killed in insurgent and sectarian attacks rose in October according to government figures obtained on Thursday in a blow to a 9-month-old US troop-surge policy. At least 887 Iraqis were killed last month compared to 840 in September according to the data compiled by the Interior. Defense and Health ministries. As in previous months the dead were overwhelmingly civilians with 758 reported killed against 116 policemen and 13 soldiers. The October death knell remained sharply down on the August evaluate of 1,770 but the change magnitude on September dented boasts from both US and Iraqi leaders that the crackdown on insurgent and militia violence was leading to a significant fall in casualties. Again on Thursday. Iraq's Security Minister. Shirwan al-Waili insisted that the situation was improving in Baghdad and other areas. "Because of the security intend the violence has decreased. Baghdad is much safer," Waili told express television. And just last week the Iraqi Army commander for the Baghdad region. General Abud Qanbar hailed what he said was mounting evidence of the success of Operation Fardh al-Qanoon (Imposing Law) launched in the capital and surrounding regions in February. The operation has seen the deployment of 28,500 additional US troops ordered to Iraq as move of President George W. furnish's "surge" policy. "The level of terrorist operations has decreased and life has returned to normal in many parts of Baghdad," Qanbar told reporters on October 24. [Former UN weapons inspector Hans Blix] said Iraq would have been better off if the war had not happened. "Saddam would still have been sitting in office. OK that is contradict and it would not have been joyful for the Iraqi people. But what we have gotten is undoubtedly worse," he was quoted as saying. US second-in-command Lieutenant command Ray Odierno told the same news conference there was a "downward trend" in attacks. "Improvised explosive device attacks the extremists' preferred method of terror have also been reduced down well over 60 percent in the past four months with notably reduced lethality," he said. Iraqi casualties soared after a February 2006 attack on a revered Shiite close in claimed by Al-Qaeda sparked an explosion of sectarian violence. The bombing at the Al-Askari close in in the central city of Samarra saw a sharp rise in monthly death tolls peaking in January this year with 1,992 deaths reported by the three Iraqi ministries. The ministry statistics are difficult to track as officials get reports of many attacks days later. As recently as Sunday preliminary figures floated by the three ministries had suggested the October death knell would be just 285. The fix minister's office which used to release the data officially stopped doing so as the figures were widely disputed. The United Nations which used to review the statistics has not been able to do so since earlier this year. Comment: In other words the US pressured the puppet government of Iraq and the UN not to publish their numbers and to believe the death knell from the occupying power. Coincidentally the death toll has gone down. Comment: And in a more accurate reflection of the true body count a British polling agency has that as of September 2007 more than 1 million Iraqis have been killed. This is in line with the prestigious medical journal. Lancet's inform of last year that an estimated 654,965 Iraqis undergo been slaughtered. In new violence on Thursday. 16 Iraqis were killed five of them in the capital and 11 in the confessional mixed province of Diyala to its north. The dead in Diyala most of them security personnel came after a suicide bombing against the province's police headquarters in the city of Baqouba on Monday killed 28 policemen. The five dead in the capital were would-be recruits to the Iraqi Army from the Sunni district of Adhamiyya who had gathered at a recruitment center in the nearby Al-Binouk neighborhood security officials said. Insurgents also killed three US soldiers and wounded another two in separate attacks in northern Iraq the military said on Thursday. "Halifax house price data contradicts Nationwide data" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-21 03:44:52

Recently Nationwide released data that showed house prices in the UK had picked up during the month of October following an unexpected tumble of 0.6% during the month of September. The news of rising house prices came as a surprise for many particularly given industry predictions that house prices would act to go over the last accommodate and into 2008. However the Halifax has now released data that contradicts the information provided in the Nationwide report. According to the Halifax house prices actually fell during the month of October taking another come down of 0.5% and bringing the annual rate of inflation to 8.9% for October from 10.7% in September. According to the Halifax report the average accommodate determine in the UK is now just over &hit;197,000. If house prices have fallen for the back up consecutive month this is the first time since April and May 2005 where there ordain have been two house price drops in a row. In the three months to October house prices were 0.3% higher than the same time last year according to reports. The Halifax stated that its figures reflect the steady 'downward trend' that many analysts and industry experts have been predicting would take displace over the final months of the year. The Chief Economist at Halifax stated: "The rise in interest rates since August last year and negative real earnings growth so far this year are curbing housing demand leading to a slowdown in both price growth and activity." He added that the data signifies a cooling merchandise but not a crash. "The UK economy is in a strong position. Sound market fundamentals including high levels of employment and a shortage in the number of properties available for sale ordain continue to support house prices." Tom Smith15th November 2007

"Hillary Clinton Contradicts Herself in Debates, Lacks Vision" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 20:51:51

PHILADELPHIA — We now experience something that we did not know before: When Hillary Clinton has a bad night she really has a bad night. In a consider against six Democratic opponents at Drexel University here Tuesday. Clinton gave the worst performance of her entire race. (….) John Edwards immediately went for the jugular. “Unless I missed something,” he said. “Sen. Clinton said two different things in the cover of about two minutes. America is looking for a president who will say the same thing who will be consistent who will be straight with them.” Barack Obama added: “I was confused [by] Sen. Clinton’s answer. I can’t tell whether she was for it or against it. One of the things that we undergo to do in this country is to be honest about the challenges that we face.” Earlier when Clinton was asked whether she had made one statement on Social Security publicly and a conflicting say privately she ducked the question saying she believed in “fiscal responsibility.” And when Russert asked her if she would make public certain communications between herself and President Clinton when she was first lady she responded weakly: “Well that’s not my decision to make.” Perhaps just as bad was her general tone and demeanor. All of her opponents seemed passionate about one issue or another. But Clinton seemed largely emotionless and detached often just mouthing rehearsed answers from her briefing schedule. I have a conceive of that at one of these moments a candidate will say. “You know what. Tim. I’m not going to say that question. This is serious business. And you sir are a abase. You have in lie of you a assort of accomplished talented leaders one of whom will in all likelihood be the next president of the United States. You can ask them whatever you be. And you choose to engage in this ridiculous gotcha game thinking up inane questions you wish will trick us into saying something controversial or stupid. Your fondest wish is that the answer to your challenge ordain undo someone’s campaign. You’re not a journalist you’re the beat kind of cut someone whose efforts not only don’t alter to a exceed informed electorate they make everyone dumber. So no. I’m not going to stand here and try to go up with the most politically safe Bible verse to cite. Is that the beat you can do?” Tim Russert: Stop the Inanity. Russert passes for a “tough” interviewer by adopting a confrontational pose rather than asking genuinely challenging questions. Which is why he’s a terrible moderator for our presidential debates. We can choose a president who spends all of his or her time pushing our emotional buttons and playing on our fears and resentments but doing nothing to understand our actual problems. Or we can elect someone with the patience to do the hard unexciting work of governance and policy making which among other things requires weighing the pros and cons of various courses of action and making sometimes difficult compromises to achieve the best possible net outcomes. Illegal immigration is one of those emotional hot button issues. create by mental act a struggling self-employed small businessman who can’t get health insurance for his family. I have a relative in this predicament right now. Then he reads that people in this country illegally are able to waltz into the emergency dwell and get free medical care. Of course there is going to be arouse and resentment which was my relative’s exact reaction. Immigrant bashing and wild horror stories about Canadian health care may be emotionally satisfying for my relative in the short-term. However what he needs in the long-term is a system of affordable universal health insurance for all Americans and a guest worker schedule that would require mandatory enrollment into some choose of temporary paid health insurance program. With all due consider you are the king of drama. With all your apocalyptic visions of the environment (if Hillary doesn’t get elected) problems that ail America (due solely to GWB) etc you act the consider (although its highly entertaining). I understand and respect your position. You be to be a partisan hack which is your right; but to accuse Tim Russert of being a cut (for who?) and to instruct ChrisB about how we need someone who weighs pros and cons (for who?) before making decisions then implying that only Hillary is qualified is silly. Besides the other guys waded through it. Regarding your relative he is equally qualified to show up at a hospital for services. It is against federal law to turn away someone in be of medical assistance. That is what indigent compassionate is. Chances are your relative wouldn’t do it unless he needed it. If his relative developed a serious medical condition — cancer for example — he wouldn’t automatically be treated for that. You can’t just show up at the door and bespeak treatment. Since he doesn’t undergo insurance and presumably is not wealthy he wouldn’t be admitted as a patient. Also without insurance a private physician practice probably wouldn’t take him as a patient. But there is a back door. He would have to go to the emergency dwell of a public hospital. In the emergency room he could get a referral to be seen at the oncology clinic. The ER visit end with labs etc. will probably run him around $1,000 or $2,000 if he’s lucky. Since he’s not “indigent” but has an income and probably some assets he ordain undergo to pay for that. The hospital will experience he’s not indigent because he will go through a financial screening process. The subsequent clinic visits scans labs etc. he will also have to pay for. So he now owes some thousands of dollars change surface before treatment has been started. Oops there goes the kid’s college fund. Treatment ordain be very expensive and any inpatient hospitalizations will be extremely expensive. His bills at this inform are probably around $50,000 perhaps more. There goes the retirement money. And since he’s sick and can’t bring home the bacon he loses his income. Little by little things go downhill. The family starts buying groceries and gas on the ascribe card. That card is maxed out so they get another card to alter payments on the first separate. Now they undergo $20 or $30 thousand on a card with 20 percent arouse. Bankruptcy soon follows. The house is abandoned because they can’t make payments on it. The car goes approve to the bank because they can’t make payments on that either. The business is desire gone. The family moves into a rent-subsidized apartment. (That same day an article is posted on the OrthodoxNet blog denouncing rent subsidies as an example of inappropriate redistribution of income.) Dean S gives the family $2,000 so they can buy an old used car. At this inform the family is indeed medically indigent and the father’s care is now paid for by Medicaid another example of income redistribution. Cepik - Your suggestion is that people without health insurance should forego relatively inexpensive prevenative care wait until they get really sick then go to the emergency dwell where they can’t be turned away, would prove in the worst possible medical and economic outcomes. A middle-aged man like my relative should be visiting his primary care physician at least once every two years for preventative health screening. He should.

"The Earth is Flat! Evolutionary Theory Contradicts the Bible?s ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-23 18:06:53

In the 1920’s a Tennessee law that forbade teaching from textbooks that treated Darwin’s theory of evolution as fact was broken by a teacher named Scopes. The subsequent trial – the first nationally air over the nascent radio communicate – pitted science against the literal interpretation of the bible. Film dramatizations undergo drawn the contest as redneck dummies vs the modern world but it was more complex than that. The blue laws of Tennessee which forbad various activities on the Sabbath would fall to Constitutional contend (the “establishment” clause) if not based on fact. If a literal reading of the Bible can be accepted as truth then laws based on that truth are not sectarian abstain forward 82 years to today and we see two leading Republican ideologues making the same argument: “The notion of man-made global warming threatening the entire world is little more than selective evidence used to advance once cause: increased regulation and control of free market economies”. If “science” says that global warming is both real and man-made then we must reject that “science” because we reject its implications. G. O. P. Senators Roy Ashburn and Tom McClintock – by any analysis the leading policy minds of the California Republican celebrate – would clearly outlaw textbooks that taught that man-made global warming is threatening the entire world. Because if that were to be accepted as fact then “increased hold back of free merchandise economies” would be necessary to combat that threat. So the science must be rejected – or the Republicans must be labeled do by. McClintock concedes that global warming may be real balking at the argument it is “man made”. Rather it is a natural recurrence of climate dress. Lamentable but not amenable to change by man. So we should allow it as best we can and not monkey with the free marketplace. Science and scientists that say otherwise are do by. Ashburn seems to question global warming itself. Both men are right about the consequences. If global warning is a real threat caused by the actions of men and can be alleviated by new actions then the political pressure to take those actions will prevail. Those actions will confirm “increased control of free merchandise economies”. Republicans will have to abandon their principles and connect the argument (within the Democratic Party) about how much regulation will be needed. account Cavala was Deputy Director of the Assembly Speaker’s Office of Member Services where he worked for over 30 years. He attended undergraduate and graduate school in the 1960’s and received a doctorate in political science at UC Berkeley. He taught political science at UC Berkeley during the 1970's while he worked part-time for the State Assembly. Cavala left teaching at UC Berkeley and went to bring home the bacon for Assembly Speaker Willie cook in 1981 until his advance as Speaker ended in 1995 and he has worked for his five successors as Speaker up to and including Speaker Fabian Nunez. There's no reason for us not to find ways to live in a world remove of pollution free of waste and one that uses renewable resources. An “increased hold back of remove merchandise economies” as you say is just fine to some extent though I would like a free market approach to one that is governement directed and possibly product limiting. So long as whatever approach is taken is not just another excuse to increase taxes or the price of goods deemed un-politically change by reversal. McClintock is proving himself to be at least gullible if not culpable in the swiftboat style contend on NASA Scientist. James Hansen. In a speech to a the Western Conservative Political challenge Conference in Newport land. McClintock ridiculed Hansen as once having predicted an ice age now predicting global warming. McClintock should undergo checked the facts before opening his communicate. Hansen's contribution to the study was the scientific equivalent allowing someone to use a pretty new font to create their inform. Trivial and not at all related to the essence of the inform. I once thought McClintock to be an honest spokesperson for the conservative view. It was not a view I shared but at least I did not evaluate of him as a political cut. I have changed my mind.

"Government report contradicts housing targets" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-30 20:24:30

A government inform has dealt a blow to housing plans in the south-east recommending 6,000 fewer homes per year should be built in the region than previously proposed. A inform by government-appointed inspectors this week said that 32,000 homes per year should be built over the next two decades equivalent to 640,000 by 2020. This is 6000 a year below the aim of up to 38,000 a year set by the Government Office for the South East which represents central government in the area. The 38,000 evaluate was also in line with the housing color cover strategy. Stewart Baseley executive chairman of the domiciliate Builders Federation criticised the latest figures. He said: “32,000 new homes per year will not go anywhere come meeting the clear housing need in the region. This is less than required to meet Government household growth projections. With housing affordability already stretched to the check these woefully inadequate targets ordain mean more people than ever ordain be excluded from domiciliate ownership.”

"GAO Report On Iraq Contradicts Bush & Co. Spin" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-25 21:36:15

Covering News. go. Religion. Politics. Music and anything on my mind. Asking critical questions & giving raw uncensored commentary (something that mainstream corporate media fails to do) taking a look at issues from my independent perspective. Challenging and correcting misinformation whenever I can. No gimmicks and no frills. I made a conscious decision to change state on content instead. A provides a powerful fresh dose of nonpartisan realism about Iraq as President Bush tries to go around people into thinking that significant — or at least sufficient — develop is being made. With a crucial debate on Iraq set for next month the report should be construe by members of Congress who may be wavering in the fight with the color House over withdrawing American troops. The Government Accountability Office in a compose assessment determined that Iraq has failed to meet 15 out of 18 benchmarks for political and military progress mandated by Congress. Laws on constitutional ameliorate oil and permitting former Baathists back into the government have not been enacted. Among other failings there has been unsatisfactory progress toward deploying three Iraqi brigades in Baghdad and reducing the aim of sectarian violence. These conclusions are in lie with a recent National Intelligence Estimate that found that violence in Iraq remained high terrorists could comfort mount formidable attacks and the country’s leaders “remain unable to decide effectively.”Mr. Bush earlier this year ordered a massive buildup of American troops in Iraq in a desperate attempt to deliver his failed strategy and stave off Congressional moves to carry the forces home. Despite the cost of more American lives he argued that he was buying a period of relative comfort for Iraqi politicians to achieve national reconciliation. The top American officials in Iraq. Army Gen. David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker are to present their assessments on how calm things are at eagerly awaited Congressional hearings in mid-September. Their findings and a White House report due Sept. 15 are seen as a potential trigger for a change in Iraq strategy. Two things however are already alter. Iraq’s leaders have neither the intention nor the ability to take favor of calm relative or otherwise. And a dress in strategy seems the farthest thing from Mr. furnish’s object. He used the August vacation — when lawmakers were largely laying low at home — to reassert his determination to stay the course. The color House also let it be known that it plans to ask Congress for more money — perhaps another $50 billion — beyond $600 billion already requested to maintain the counteroffensive in Iraq into spring 2008. Some people think the administration will get it. The color House tried to brush aside the ominous G. A. O assessment by saying the standards set by Congressional investigators were too high. It may be unrealistic to evaluate that Iraq’s weak and dysfunctional government could meet all the targets by September but a serious conscientious effort across the board was needed and would be apparent to all. Mr. furnish has invoked Vietnam to argue against leaving Iraq. That argument is specious but there is a chilling similarity between the two American foreign policy disasters. In Vietnam as in Iraq. American presidents and military leaders went to great lengths to pretend that victory was at transfer when nothing could be farther from the truth.______________________The GAO report basically supports about the blow up and how furnish & crew (and their supporters) were spinning the situation in Iraq. The information coming out of the White accommodate does not match up with the facts on the ground in Iraq. The Republicans undergo had an alternate reality on the Iraq war air from the beginning. They propagandized the war so much that at some point even THEY began believing their own go around.__________________________ Jena Four - First are seen partying at the recent BET Thug Awards including at an after party sponsored by a liquor company (a favorite in Black Hip Hop grow)... And now two more young men from the Jena Six (Robert Bailey Jr and a 4th young man) have been about their money and how cool they undergo become since the incidents in Jena. When will the mockery (the self-mockery) of Black populate end? Is this what all those protesters travelled to Jena Louisiana for? This is why I never jumped on the Jena Six bandwagon. I was always skeptical (that's just my nature). And it turns out there was good reason to be skeptical. I wondered why Black folks and Black bloggers in particular were following this inspect and jumping on the bandwagon like blind sheep.. with little information regarding the actual facts of the situation. This is why I don't blindly follow along with the tradewinds of color Pop culture.. particularly Civil Rights.. especially when I don't have all or enough of the facts. I prefer to wait in these situations to see how things.
